Your state certifies you
A state agency sets the class ladder, the experience minimums, and the fees. Most states run a Class I through Class IV structure, with Class I the entry grade.
Many states use the ABC exam
The Association of Boards of Certification (ABC) publishes standardized exams used by many states, though not all. The math and process content is broadly shared even where the paperwork is not.
You climb by class
You certify at an entry grade, then move up as you log documented operating experience and continuing-education units (CEUs). Higher classes gate the higher-paying seats.

Is the wastewater operator certification exam hard?
For most candidates the knowledge questions are manageable, but the plant math is where people fail: dosage, detention time, and loading calculations with real decimals and unit conversions under time pressure. Operators who drill that math with worked solutions, not a static formula sheet, pass far more often.
