Certification is administered state by state, so operators moving, comparing offers, or just curious how their own state stacks up have never had one page that lines every jurisdiction up on the same axes. This matrix does: it is built directly from the same dated, sourced per-state facts as the individual state pages, so it cannot drift out of sync with them.
Quick answer
Do all states use the same water operator certification exam?
No. Most states test on the national ABC (Association of Boards of Certification, now Water Professionals International) exam bank, but a real minority, including Alabama, Colorado, and California's wastewater program, write and administer their own exam instead. A handful of states run a mix, one discipline on ABC and another state-authored, which is why the "Exam" column below can read "Mixed by discipline."
