Water and wastewater operator glossary
The terms operators meet on the exam and on shift, defined from public sources. Every acronym is expanded on first use.
- CEU (continuing education unit)
- The training credit, sometimes counted as contact hours, that operators must accumulate to renew a certification. The required amount and renewal cycle are set by each state and differ widely.
- Chlorine demand
- The amount of chlorine consumed by reactions with organics, ammonia, and pathogens in the water, so it is not available as protection. It relates to dose and residual by a single equation: dose equals demand plus residual. Solving for one of the three when given the others is a common exam calculation.
- Class (or grade)
- The level of an operator certificate, most commonly Class I to IV (or Grade 1 to 4), with I the entry level and IV the large, complex-plant level. Facilities carry the same rating, and the operator in responsible charge must hold a certificate at or above the plant's class.
- CT (contact time)
- Disinfectant concentration multiplied by contact time, used to demonstrate adequate pathogen inactivation under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Operators compare a calculated CT value against required CT tables for the pathogen, temperature, and pH.
- Detention time
- How long water stays in a tank or basin, equal to the tank volume divided by the flow rate. A load-bearing calculation for sedimentation, disinfection contact, and clarifier performance on the certification exam.
- F:M ratio (food-to-microorganism ratio)
- The balance between incoming organic load (food) and the mass of microorganisms in an activated-sludge process. Operators adjust wasting to hold it in range; it is one of the hardest wastewater-math topics on the exam.
- Hydraulic loading rate
- The volume of water applied to a treatment process per unit of surface area over time, a divide-flow-by-area calculation like the surface loading rate. It appears across filtration, sedimentation, and biological-treatment sizing, and rewards the same discipline: get the area right and keep the flow units consistent.
- MLSS (mixed liquor suspended solids)
- The concentration of suspended solids in the aeration tank of an activated-sludge wastewater process, in milligrams per liter. A key control parameter feeding the food-to-microorganism ratio and sludge age.
- Operator-in-training (OIT)
- An entry role, and in many states a formal certificate, that lets a person work at a certified water or wastewater facility under a certified operator while accumulating the documented experience required for a first full grade. The standard, paid on-ramp into the operator trade.
- Pounds formula
- The core dosing relationship in operator math: pounds per day equals flow in million gallons per day (MGD) times dose in milligrams per liter (mg/L) times 8.34 pounds per gallon of water. Dropped decimals and unit slips on this formula are the most common math failure.
- Primacy
- Primary enforcement responsibility for the Safe Drinking Water Act. Most states hold primacy, which is why operator certification is administered state by state on a federal baseline rather than by a single national body.
- Reciprocity
- A state's policy on recognizing an operator certification earned in another state, sometimes granting an equivalent certification by endorsement and sometimes requiring a new exam. It matters most to operators who relocate.
- Sludge age (mean cell residence time)
- The average time solids stay in an activated-sludge system, a primary process-control lever. Operators calculate it from the solids inventory and the rate of solids leaving the process.
- Surface loading rate
- The flow applied to a filter or basin divided by its surface area, expressed in gallons per minute per square foot. It measures how hard a filter or clarifier is being worked. Getting the area wrong (bed versus total, or diameter versus radius on a round basin) is a frequent exam error.
- SVI (sludge volume index)
- A measure of how well activated sludge settles, the volume in milliliters occupied by one gram of suspended solids after 30 minutes of settling. High values signal bulking and poor settling.
