Water Cert Prep content is reviewed by Water Cert Prep editorial team before publication. Review means checking every fact against the primary source that actually governs it, not adding an unverified opinion. We do not claim the Water Cert Prep editorial team holds a water or wastewater operator certificate, a state operator license, or an ABC credential. The authority this page stands on is the verification process below, not a credential.
Operator certification is administered state by state under Safe Drinking Water Act primacy, so there is no single national rulebook to quote. That is exactly why the process matters more than a byline here: each fact has to be traced back to the agency that sets it.
How data is sourced and maintained
Exam fees, application fees, class and grade structures, education and experience minimums, continuing-education requirements, and reciprocity rules come from the certifying agency for that jurisdiction: the state environmental or health department, the state water board, or the certification program it delegates to. California's figures come from the State Water Resources Control Board, Texas's from the TCEQ, Ohio's from Ohio EPA, and so on for every state we publish. Where a state contracts its exam to ABC or to a testing vendor, we cite that program by name too.
Each fact is stored with its own source link and its own verification date, so a fee checked last month and an experience rule checked last year are not flattened into one page-level date that overstates freshness. We do not reprint another site's compiled 50-state table; every row is checked against the agency source.
Every page carries an updated date, and this site's freshness policy
re-verifies published facts every 90 days. A page that
falls out of that window is queued for re-verification, not left to go stale. A
jurisdiction that has not been verified yet stays unpublished rather than shipping
as a guess.
The statistics page is this site's own original data study: every figure on it is computed at build time from the verified fee records behind the state pages, never hand-typed.
What we do not publish
- Real exam questions. Certification exams are secured, so our practice material is written from public plant-operation physics and published formula references.
- A fee or requirement we could not trace to the agency that sets it. If a state publishes only a range, or sets the amount per license type, we say so and leave the precise figure out rather than inventing a midpoint.
- Pass-rate or salary claims without the published dataset behind them.
