How do you calculate a clarifier surface loading rate?
Divide the flow by the tank surface area. For a surface or overflow rate, use flow in gallons per day over area in square feet. For a round clarifier, area is pi times the radius squared, so halve the diameter first. A 1-MGD flow over a 40-foot clarifier is about 796 gallons per day per square foot.
Filtration rate (gallons per minute per square foot) = flow (GPM) / filter surface area (square feet). Surface or overflow rate (gallons per day per square foot) = flow (gallons per day) / clarifier surface area. Weir overflow rate (gallons per day per foot) = flow (gallons per day) / weir length (feet). Round-tank area is pi x radius squared.

Common slip Using the diameter instead of the radius in the area (that quadruples the area and quarters the rate), or mixing GPM into a gallons-per-day rate. Halve the diameter first, and match the flow's time unit to the rate you want.
Where this shows up
Loading rates decide whether a filter, clarifier, or launder is over-run. Filtration rate uses the flow from the flow-conversions drill; the round-tank area is the same geometry the volume calculations use. The process calculator computes all three loading rates.

Area = 3.14 x 25 x 25 = 1,962 sq ft (radius 25, not diameter 50). Surface rate = 2,000,000 gpd / 1,962 = 1,019 gpd per sq ft. Using the diameter in the area formula quarters the area and quadruples the rate.
